There is growing worldwide appreciation of the fact that Small and Medium Enterprises play a catalytic role in the development process of most economies. This is reflected in the form of their increasing number and rising proportion in the overall product manufacturing, exports, manpower employment, technical innovations and promotion of entrepreneurial skills. CII has always played an important role in furthering the cause of SMEs.
Businesses flourish when their direction is charted with the goal in mind. In a dynamic business environment we have today, we tend to get unsure of the goals that seem to shift overtime. Fundamentals of managing businesses have undergone a paradigm shift over the past few years. Internal business order has become a prerequisite to attaining business excellence. It has become important that while running businesses, firms increasingly take a long-term view. It is however noticed that when survival instinct takes precedence, firms look for short-term solutions to tide over the current difficulties. The actions are often reactive, and further aggravate the firms’ survival in the longer run. Long-term survival depends upon how firms are able to think proactively, with a long-term growth path in mind. With the only view to survive the today’s problems, firms tend to forget the maxim “Look before you leap”.
Although SMEs act as supporting pillars of manufacturing, they have their own specific problems and issues. To sustain and further promote the growth of this rapidly expanding sector, these issues need to be clearly understood and effectively addressed. With this objective in view CII [Western Region] is organizing a two-day mega vent SME Development Meet on 21st and 22nd February 2006 in Mumbai.
