At its 2005 staging, EMO Hannover extended its global leadership and reasserted its undisputed role as the most popular international meeting point for the World of Machine Tools.
Over 160,000 trade visitors from 82 different countries lined up to explore the latest trends and cutting-edge engineering advancements for the manufacturing industries, as showcased by some 2,000 exhibitors from 39 different nations.
Many exhibitors expressed great satisfaction with the high-yield business talks they had with scores of visitors from all over the world.
The foreign visitor turnout from abroad, at 35 percent, was well above that of the previous event in 2001. There was a 10 percent increase in the visitors from overseas, especially from Asia and North America. The increase was particularly notable in the case of visitors from Japan and the USA. The next largest foreign visitor contingents were from Switzerland, India, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, France and Great Britain.
Participating exhibitors were in excellent spirits at the close of the event. The highlights they chose to underline in their individual assessments varied depending on their particular objectives at the show.
Special praise was given for the outstanding number and caliber of visitors from all around the world, as well as for the volume and sales potential of the talks held.
Many exhibitors reported a huge leap in the number of specific inquiries reported. In some cases, exhibitors reported a repetition of requests for quotes as well as actual order signings - despite the fact that EMO is not positioned as a sales exhibition per se.
The above trends were also reflected in the visitor makeup of the show. Visitors had come to Hannover with specific investment plans than in 2001. The same was true for over 50 percent of all overseas visitors, whose investment interests centered on Machine Tools [47 percent], Precision Tools [15 percent], Measuring Technology/Quality Control Systems [13 percent], Production/Process Automation [11 percent] and Continuing Education [9 percent].
The 26 international associations represented at EMO Hannover 2005 gave the event high ratings on behalf of their respective members. Asian associations were especially pleased with the outcome of the show, indicating that their members had scored the intended image and brand awareness gains in the international arena, thus reaching their strategic targets throughout Europe and especially in Eastern Europe.
Exhibitors registered a positive mood and enhanced willingness to invest among their client industries. Visitors, on the other hand, were especially interested in seeing the current state of the art before making any decisions to invest.
Alongside the products showcased by exhibitors, the supporting program served to highlight the innovative quality of EMO. A large number of trade visitors followed talks on pivotal new developments affecting future machine tools at a two-day symposium. Discussions were held on the future of production as well as the issues of micro and precision processing, modularization, automation, simulation and optimization.
Visitors were especially interested in the themes of cost reduction in manufacturing, increased flexibility and new machining methods. The ongoing integration of various production technologies was a pronounced trend at EMO Hannover. Whereas in 2001 dual technologies were the common theme, exhibitors in 2005 presented multipurpose machining centers with built-in lathing, milling, threading and drilling components, allowing them to replace up to five machines and reducing processing times by a massive 90 percent. New services across the entire machine tools spectrum are now also market-ready. These include simulation programs to enhance machine development or test and optimize applications before a machine is ever supplied. They can reproduce the performance of the subsequent machine with up to 95 percent accuracy.
Over 8,500 young people visited a special youth display to check out the latest technology and career prospects in machine tools and production engineering.
